Kalevala Project

Under the northern skies - Movie

Under the Northern Skies is an ambitious musical project that seeks to bring Kalevala’s timeless mythology and cultural heritage to international audiences in a fresh and inspiring way.

At its heart lies a powerful blend of music and storytelling, culminating in a cinematic short film that captures the spirit of the North.

The project will premiere in 2025, marking the 190th anniversary of the Kalevala, and offering audiences around the world a unique opportunity to experience Finland’s national epic through a modern artistic lens.

This project was made possible by our sponsors:

Amidst the icy winds of the North, a song is born.

Young Lemminkäinen, restless and bold, seeks adventure and love. When he meets Kyllikki, their fates intertwine in a dance of light and shadow. But fate is merciless—Louhi, Mistress of the North, sets him on an impossible quest: to slay the Swan of Tuonela. Betrayal and vengeance threaten his path, forcing his mother to embark on a desperate journey to bring him back from the realm of the dead.

Guiding the tale is Kanteletar, the Spirit of Song, portrayed by Ida Elina, whose voice and kantele echo Finland’s ancient traditions. Inspired by the Kalevala—the Finnish national epic that also influenced J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings—Under the Northern Skies revives the timeless power of love, loss, and hope in a visually breathtaking and musically immersive journey.

Under The Northern Skies is not just a film – it is an immersive experience that intertwines music, mythology, and the beauty of Finnish nature in a unique way. This extraordinary project brings Kalevala to life for a new generation, both in Finland and internationally. It is a tribute to Finnish cultural heritage and the enchanting sound of the kantele – and at the same time, a modern work of art that blends traditional storytelling with contemporary filmmaking, a live concert tour, film festivals, events, video content, news coverage, and social media.

Lyrics

Under the Northern Skies

Näin emoni ennen lauloi
Käy kuutar loistamahan
Näillä katajan karuilla mailla
Soi kaiut Pohjolan

Nouse kuuset, nouse metsät
Tähtiä tähyämähän
Nouse veräjiltä vierahilta
puut jo ylenemähän

Taivu tuomet tuorehiksi
Katajat karvahiksi
Taivu suuret suot susiksi
Karhut kauheiksi

Heei

Näin emoni ennen lauloi:
Käy kuutar loistamahan
Näillä katajan karuilla mailla
Soi kaiut Pohjolan

Läksi puut jo ylenemähän
Ja nuoret nousemahan
Läksin minäkin matalilta mailta ihmettä katsomahan

Lauloi tuomet tuorehiksi
Katajat karvahiksi
Lauloi suuret suot susiksi
Karhut kauheiksi

Näin emoni ennen lauloi..

Heei

Näin emoni ennen lauloi..

Tule, tule, veljeni kanssan laulamahan
Tule, tule, veljeni kanssan laulamahan
Saavu, saavu, siskoni iloks istumahan
Saavu, saavu, siskoni iloks istumahan

Tule, tule, isoni joudu laulamahan
Tule, tule, isoni joudu laulamahan
Nouse, neito nuori, nouse jo tanssimahan
Nouse, neito nuori, nouse jo tanssimahan

Laulusi kerälle kääri, kelkkahan pistä kerän ääni

Soi salot suloiset ja laulu vuorten alla
Soi metsät mäkiset
Ja myös talven halla

Sae saatteli sanoja,
virttä tuulet toivat
Linnut lirkutti lauluja
aaltoset ajoivat

Soitto ota sormillesi, laulu lantehille
Soitto ota sormillesi, laulu lantehille
Helkyttele heleästi meidän kuuleville
Helkyttele heleästi meidän kuuleville

Laulusi kerälle kääri, kelkkahan pistä kerän ääni
Veä kelkalla kotihin, siitä riihen luoksi
Laulu aitan parven päälle ja onni luokse juoksi

Soi salot suloiset..

Tämän iltamme iloks, päivän kunniaksi
Tämän iltamme iloks, päivän kunniaksi

Soi salot suloiset..

Kuutamon laulavan kuulen
Ja valossa sen hengitän
Ota käteni käteesi ja valasi sun vanno
Ettet sotiin enää sä käy

Kuutamon laulavan kuulen
Ja valossa sen hengitän
Ota käteni käteesi ja valasi sun vanno
Ettet kyliin enää sä käy

Kuutamon laulavan kuulen
Ja valossa sen hengitän
Nuo toisilleen valansa ikuiset vannoivat
Eessä Korkeimman

Oi, emoni, kanna vainovaatteheni
Sotaan mennäkseni
Ja kalpaan tarttuakseni

Jo on Kyllikki käyny kylässä, veräjillä
Penkereillä vierahilla
Valansa rikkojilla

Mieleni minun tekevi tuonne Pohjolahan
Soan mettä maistamahan
Neion kosintahan

Mieleni minun on hiien hirven ammuntahan
Tuonen joen joutsenen tuon
Neion kosintahan

Tuville Pohjolahan

Maillensa mainingit mennehet
Hämärä metsään hiipii
Kuiske käy kylmänä kuutamon
Kurjen ääni kiirii

Varjele vakainen Luoja

Yö kun mustine murheineen
Mannut alleen peittää
Pilvien paimenet pimeydessä
Manan mailla kiitää

Varjele vakainen Luoja
Varjele vakainen Luoja
Varjele vakainen Luoja
Varjele vakainen Luoja

Luoja meille sä leposi anna
Yö kun päättyy aamuun kanna
Kaitse kaunoinen Jumala
yöllisnä tukena

Luoja meille sä leposi anna
Yö kun murtuu aamuun kanna
Varjele vakainen Luoja
Lastesi apuna

Varjele vakainen Luoja
Varjele vakainen Luoja
Varjele vakainen Luoja (Poimi pois jo pimeän pelko)
Varjele vakainen Luoja (Poimi pois jo pimeän pelko)

Varjele voimalta kauhialta
Varjon vallalta ankaralta
Kaitse kaunoinen Jumala
Varjele vakainen Luoja

Äiti lieto Lemminkäisen
Aina koissa arvelevi:
”Kunne kaukoni kaonnut,
Minne saanut poikoeni?”

Ei tieä emo polonen,
Eikä kantaja katala
Kun ei kuulu jo tulevan
Matkoiltansa maailmalta

Emo etsi eksynyttä
Kaonnutta kaipoavi
Viikon etsi, eipä löyä
Tuli kohta mureheksi

Kannot käänti kallellehen
Kivet syrjähän sytäsi
Kysyi puilta poikoansa
Haot potki portahiksi

Etkö nähnyt poikan, nähnyt poikoani
Hopeasta sauvoani, kultaista omenaani?
Etkö nähnyt poikan, nähnyt poikoani
Hopeasta sauvoani, kultaista omenaani?

Veet saukkona samosi
Korvet kontiona
Jäniksenä järven rannat
Juoksi suuret suot sutena

Päivyt vastahan tulevi
Päivälle kumarteleikse
Kuuhut vastahan tulevi
Niin kuulle kumarteleikse

Etkö nähnyt poikan, nähnyt poikoani
Hopeasta sauvoani, kultaista omenaani?
Etkö nähnyt poikan, nähnyt poikoani
Hopeasta sauvoani, kultaista omenaani?

”Jo on poikasi polonen
Kaotettu, kuoletettu
Tuonen mustahan jokehen
Manalan ikivetehen”

Itse äiti Lemminkäisen
Saapi rautaisen haravan
Lensi Tuonelan joelle
Kohti kosken kohisevan

Veti kerran, tuosta toisen
Elotukku sai etehen
Saapi pian poikoansa
Haravahan rauhaisehen

Tuospa poikoeni, sainpa takas poikoeni
Hyvän Luojani luvalla, haravalla harvaksella
Tuospa poikoeni, sainpa takas poikoeni
Hyvän Luojani luvalla, haravalla harvaksella
Tuospa poikoeni, sainpa takas poikoeni
Hyvän Luojani luvalla, haravalla harvaksella

Lauloi emo ehtosella
Tuonen mustalla joella

Tulta tuiski tuima rauta
Terä valkiata
Kuolema ja hauta
on säilän saamisina
Vuoret lohkievat
Alla kalvan kauhian

Yli Tulisen kosken ja palavan paateron
Karhujen kannoilta käyn
Kumu kylästä kauaksi kuuluu
Miehet miekkoja hiovat näin

En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi
E-e-en, e-e-en
En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi

Hei!

Linnut vaikenevat
Väläyksestä hopian
Ne pakenevat
Eeltä kylmän noutajan
Luut lohkievat
Alla kalvan kauhian

Kalliiksi käyneet lauluni lunnaat
kalpa kädessäni levoton
Kumu kylästä kauaksi kuuluu
Miekat satapäin valmiina on

En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi
E-e-en, e-e-en
En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi
E-e-en, e-e-en

Halki liekin ja surkian surman
Miekkani varressa elämä on
Perille tupihin Pohjolan kurjan
Johdattaa kalpa tuo kuolematon

En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi

Vaan kaukana jossain aamu sarastaa
Ja valaisee sen portin ja tutun pihamaan

En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi
E-e-en, e-e-en

En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa —

En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi
E-e-en, e-e-enEn koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi
E-e-en, e-e-en

Huutoni hukkuu alle verisen vihani
Miekanko varressa elämä on?
Jo saavat ne minut ja katkeran lihani
kalpa vain kuolematon

En koskaan (koskaan)
Taakse katsoa mä voi
Taakse katsoa mä voi

Kaartuu yllemme pohjoinen taivas
Allamme routainen maa.
Miten suuri on aaltojen raivo
Kussa poikani kuljetkaan?

If darkness should fill these skies
if the years should dim my eyes
If the frozen haze would rise

Here under the northern skies
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you
Here under the northern lights
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you

Should the stars hide their faces
My love stays the same
the hammers striking and mountains breaking
I’ll love you ´til end of days

If darkness should fill these skies
if the years should dim my eyes
If the frozen haze would rise

Here under the northern skies
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you
Here under the northern lights
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you

And if darkness fills these skies
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you
If these years should dim my eyes
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you
I will wait, I will wait, I will wait for you

Liner Notes

Under the Northern Skies

Thank you for this extraordinary journey.

I never dreamed of creating Kalevala-inspired music. For many years, my artistic path was about reshaping the kantele through pop and crossover worlds. And yet, this project quietly drew me in — and refused to let go. Looking back now, I know we are standing at the beginning of something new. And the path already travelled has been remarkable.

The seeds of this album were planted years ago in a small concert hall in Kitee, Finland, where a handful of my Kalevala-themed compositions were first performed. Among them were Lemminkäisen äiti (Mother of Lemminkäinen) and Tule kanssain (Come along with me). Those songs stayed with me. Over time, they became part of my repertoire whenever there was a space for Finnish mythology and ancient stories to be heard.

In early 2024, the idea was modest: to create a small EP in honour of the 190th anniversary of the Kalevala. But ideas have a life of their own. With the encouragement of collaborators and the right conversations at the right moments, the project expanded — from an EP into music videos, from videos into a short film shot in Kainuu, and from there into a full album and an audiovisual concert production.

At its heart, this album tells the story of one of the Kalevala’s most iconic heroes: Lemminkäinen. A restless, passionate and fearless figure, he moves between love and war, pride and vulnerability. His journey takes him from heroic quests to tragic downfall — and ultimately to rebirth through his mother’s unwavering devotion. In many ways, his story is timeless: it is about recklessness and longing, loss and redemption, and the deep human need to belong.

What began as something intimate grew into a collective vision. An extraordinary number of passionate people joined the journey — musicians, filmmakers, sponsors, municipalities and companies who believed in the idea. Their courage and support made this possible. I am deeply grateful for their trust and commitment.

The short film Under the Northern Skies has since travelled far beyond Finland, receiving international recognition and awards, and bringing both the film and this music to audiences in New York, California, Scotland, Croatia and beyond. The response has been humbling.

Ironically, after years of consciously distancing myself from tradition, I found myself returning to the roots of the kantele — not as nostalgia, but as renewal. The music on this album draws from Kalevala-inspired texts, incantation-like melodic language and the ancient tonal colours of Finnish tradition, while carrying the rhythmic clarity shaped by my pop background.

This album is not an ending. It is a beginning.

Under the northern skies, something continues to grow.

— Ida Elina

Short Track Notes

Under the Northern Skies

Every opera or symphonic work begins with an overture, and I wanted this album to open in the same spirit. The Prelude weaves traditional kantele textures — including echoes of the Finnish melody Konevitsan kirkonkellot — while subtly introducing the album’s central themes. Motifs from Lemminkäisen äiti, Varjele vakainen Luoja, and Kehtolaulu appear here in embryonic form, foreshadowing the emotional journey ahead.

The first single from the album, awarded second place in the Kansanlaulu 2050 competition. The song carries an ancient poetic atmosphere inspired by Kalevala language:

“Thus my mother once sang before…
let the echoes of the North resound.”

In the piece, trees are sung into growth and forest animals into prosperity. The sound world is intentionally built around kantele and layered vocals alone — voice as creative force shaping nature itself.

This piece introduces Lemminkäinen and his mother in the film narrative. The album functions simultaneously as a film score — a deliberate artistic choice. Rather than separating the album from the short film, I wanted to include Panu Aaltio’s beautiful themes composed for Under the Northern Skies. As the album tells Lemminkäinen’s story, these musical chapters belong within it.

One of the earliest compositions of the project, alongside Lemminkäisen äiti. I wanted something spirited and joyful, yet unmistakably Kalevala-inspired, drawing directly from epic text. The arrangement begins with driving kantele and layered vocals before expanding in the final choruses into guitar, bass and drums. Here, Lemminkäinen courts Kyllikki — passion and youthful recklessness intertwined.

Kuutamo was written in just half an hour during the intense editing phase of the film, when we realised a love theme was missing. The opening words — “Kuutamon laulavan kuulen” (“I hear the moonlight singing”) — felt immediately right. Originally a pianist, I composed this piece at the piano, and from the first notes it demanded that instrument rather than kantele. The album version was recorded live in a single take — piano and vocals captured simultaneously — preserving the intimacy of its birth.

Written within the same hour as Kuutamo, this piece channels entirely different emotions. The lyrics are drawn almost directly from the Kalevala. Lemminkäinen, deeply disappointed in Kyllikki, vows to leave home forever and seek a new bride.
From my original piano-vocal demo, Panu Aaltio created a powerful orchestration that intensifies this dramatic turning point — pride and anger overtaking tenderness.

Early sketches of this piece emerged in spring 2024, but its final form took shape during a composing retreat in the Finnish archipelago. The surrounding pitch-black spring night infused the music with a sense of looming darkness. Built upon a five-string kantele motif that continues throughout the piece, and supported by layered backing vocals, the song accompanies Lemminkäinen’s fatal quest: to shoot the Swan of Tuonela in order to win the Maiden of the North.

Composed by Panu Aaltio, this piece underscores one of the story’s darkest moments. On the river of Tuonela, Lemminkäinen is slain by the blind old herdsman of Pohjola. Tuonen Poika rises to dismember him and cast the pieces into the underworld’s waters. The music carries the weight and inevitability of descent.

One of the project’s original compositions and its emotional core. Inspired by the epic episode in which Lemminkäinen’s mother searches tirelessly for her son — “as an otter through the streams, as a bear through the forests, as a hare along the shores, as a wolf across the marshes.” The lyrics follow the Kalevala closely. Musically, a driving 4/4 kantele bass propels the song forward. Vocally, I sing both narrator and mother — calling out for her lost son. Ultimately, she gathers his scattered body and restores him to life.

Having risen from death, Lemminkäinen swears revenge upon the Mistress of Pohjola, who knowingly sent him to his doom. He kills the Lord of Pohjola, and war follows. The song burns with anger — the sword glowing hot in his hand. Yet in the bridge, a longing for home briefly emerges, only to be overshadowed by vengeance.

Here, the mother’s perspective returns. Beneath the arching northern sky and over frozen ground, she waits — no matter how many years may pass.

“If darkness should fill these skies…
here under the northern lights I will wait for you.”

A traditional Kalevala melody rises especially in the C-section, grounding the piece in ancient sound while carrying timeless maternal devotion.

Written for my two daughters, this song comes directly from my own life. Though not heard in the film, its atmosphere is deeply Kalevala-inspired. Built upon a simple five-string kantele melody and layered vocals, it offers gentle wishes of peaceful sleep and soft winds — a moment of protection before dawn.

Panu Aaltio’s luminous theme closes the album. I wanted it to stand as a final reflection.

The theme is sorrowful yet hopeful — not a triumphant ending, but a transformation. The hero’s story settles into memory beneath the northern sky.

Acknowledgements

This project would not exist without the courage, trust and dedication of an extraordinary group of people.

My deepest gratitude goes to composer Panu Aaltio, whose themes and orchestral vision expanded this story far beyond my original sketches, and to producer and mixing engineer Tuomas Aukio, whose musical sensitivity and patience shaped the sonic world of this album from its earliest ideas to its final form.

I am profoundly thankful to the entire film team behind Under the Northern Skies, whose creativity and commitment transformed music into moving image — and to the people and landscapes of Kainuu, where the film was brought to life. The forests, waters and northern light are part of this music.

Warm thanks to our collaborators, supporters, municipalities and partners who believed in this vision when it was still only an idea. Your support made this possible.

Finally, to my family — for patience, love and grounding. And to my daughters, who remind me daily why stories of courage, protection and hope continue to matter.

Under the northern skies, this journey continues.
